Mountain Caribou in Managed Landscapes
CaribouBecause of their dependence on arboreal lichen that are most abundant on old trees, integrating caribou and forest management is a major challenge in the Columbia Mountains. A caribou research project began in 1992 and will continue for at least 4 more years. The project has two parts. The first investigates the ecology of caribou and wolves using radio-telemetry and ground trailing techniques. The second part involves experimental partial cut timber harvesting trials. These partial cutting experiments have provided a framework to be used by other ecologists interested in partial cutting timber management. Some small mammal inventories have began in the experimental units.
