Flathead Bear Study
Although not located in the Columbia Mountains, the Flathead drainage of southeastern British Columbia is the site of a black and grizzly bear study that has been conducted by CMI members for the past 18 years. The Flathead Bear Study has focused on the relationship between bears and industrial activity but, due to its longevity and intensity, the study has explored many facets of bear ecology.

Currently, female survival and reproduction and dispersal patterns of both sexes are major objectives of field work while continuing the development of a cumulative effects/timber supply model is the primary analytical objective. Due to relatively good access and a high density of bears, the Flathead Study Area has proved to be an excellent location to study both species of bears.
