Introduction:

Bird Research in and adjacent to the Illecillewaet River Watershed. In addition to the projects described below, there have been genetic and isotopic surveys conducted by the Canadian Wildlife Service (Saskatoon).

There have been a number of major studies on the bird life within and adjacent to the Illecillewaet River Watershed. 

1. Goldstream Breeding Bird Survey Route
(Hwy 23 North between Goldstream and Downie Creek, approximate grid position: 11U 0401000 5703000 (NAD 27))

2. Christmas Bird Count - Revelstoke, British Columbia

  • includes the mouth of the Illecillewaet River at Revelstoke
  • centre of 15 km count radius is the Trans-Canada Highway bridge over the Columbia River just north of the mouth of the Illecillewaet River: 11U 0414500 565100 (NAD 27)
  • annual since 1981

3. Land-bird Monitoring - Bird Studies Revelstoke

4. Waterfowl Monitoring - Bird Studies Revelstoke

  • monthly monitoring from selected points along the Columbia River adjacent to the mouth of the Illecillewaet River

5. Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship
(M.A.P.S.) Site - Bird Studies Revelstoke

  • part of international breeding bird monitoring site for neotropical migrants
  • only M.A.P.S. station in British Columbia (to 2000)
  • active since 1993
  • located at Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk in Mount Revelstoke National Park: 11U 0435702 5660072 (NAD 83)
